Preet Comments on Afghanistan Pledging Conference Falling Short of Target

Preet Kaur Gill MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Member for International Development, commenting on the UN pledging conference for Afghanistan co-hosted by the UK raising only $2.4 billion of its $4.4 billion target, said:

“It is devastating for Afghanistan that the UK-hosted pledging conference has fallen $2 billion short of its target.
"Labour has warned that our influence on the world stage has been tarnished by the merger and cuts to our aid budget. The world needs leaders to step up on humanitarian and development issues, not retreat from their responsibilities.
“Afghans are starving, women’s rights are in reverse, and the economy is in freefall. Global leaders should stand with the brave women and girls calling for their freedom, not turn their backs.”
