Local MP, Preet Kaur Gill, had the pleasure of joining pupils and teachers from Blakesley Hall Primary School on Thursday to launch a new school housing system.
Having been inspired by the work of Ms Gill as Shadow Cabinet Minister for International Development and as the first Sikh female MP, Blakesley Hall Primary School have named one of the houses, Gill House, in her honour.
Six new houses have been launched, named after a significant role-model in Birmingham, and the Midlands. The new houses have been named:
Gill House (after Preet Kaur Gill, the Labour and Co-operative MP for Edgbaston. She is the first female Sikh MP)
Bailey House (named after Casey Bailey, writer, performer and educator from Nechells)
Adenegan House (named after Kare Adenegan is a Coventry born Paralympian)
Yousafzai House (named after the Pakistani-born, Birmingham-adopted, activist and campaigner. She has campaigned for equality and access to education for girls)
Boitos House (named after a Romanian born and Birmingham-based dentist)
Phelps House (after James and Oliver Phelps, the twin brothers from Birmingham who acted in the Harry Potter films as Fred and George Weasley)
Preet Gill MP said, “It was wonderful to visit Blakesley Hall today. I know from personal experience how important representation truly is and so to be that role model for the students here and have the honour of having a house named after me was very humbling. I hope that in having houses named after local people who have made positive change will provide real inspiration for the students to go on to achieve anything they set their minds to.”
During the visit, Ms Gill had a tour of the school, met some of the students from Gill House who asked questions about her work as an MP and designed a mascot with the students from her house.
Kirsty Knight, Head of Gill House and Year 6 Teacher at Blakesley Hall said, “I’m so proud to see our school relaunch the House system. Blakesley Hall is a culturally diverse school, representing over 30 different nations and approximately 30 languages. To be able to name the houses after such inspirational leaders from our region that reflect the community at Blakesley Hall is fantastic and I hope it offers real motivation to our students to succeed in their future lives.”
