Birmingham debates if Commonwealth Games could return as city council faces financial crisis

Birmingham Mail, 19th July 2023

MP for Birmingham Edgbaston Preet Kaur Gill told us: "Hosting the event in Birmingham last year was one of my life’s highlights: having nations come together from across the world to celebrate sport and inclusion showcased Birmingham at its best and was a wonder to behold.

"The benefits of holding the Games in the city were widespread: notably, it brought investment to the tune of hundreds of millions to some of the most deprived patches in Birmingham. “The Commonwealth Games have the power to uplift a city, spiritually and financially. I really hope that a solution can be found now that Victoria has withdrawn its commitment to put on the Games and I look forward to the event wherever it takes place.”
